A car as an investment? In rare cases this can work. It doesn’t even have to be an extremely rare classic car or a super exclusive super sports car. A Toyota Supra was recently auctioned in the USA. Former new price was around 43,000 euros – 28 years and approx. 120,000 kilometers later someone shelled out the equivalent of over 123,000 euros for the JDM icon!
Such an enormous price increase is of course the exception; moreover, all running costs for maintenance, insurance and service have been left out of this simple calculation. Nevertheless, the price development is more than remarkable. This is mainly due to the hype that the Supra (yes, according to Toyota the correct name of the sports car is the Supra) is experiencing.
With the model known internally as the A90, the fifth Supra generation was presented in 2019 – in cooperation with BMW, because the Supra and Z4 share far more than the platform. Before that, the sports car icon went on a 17-year hiatus as the Supra MKIV was discontinued in 2002.
The fourth generation, internally called JZA80, is not only for JDM fans of the Supra par excellence. The enthusiasm for the 4.52 meter long Toyota was fueled by films like “The Fast and the Furious” and video games like “Gran Turismo” or “Need for Speed Underground”. The Japanese sports car is now a legend.
Supra number four came on the market in 1993 as the successor to the MA70 and was offered as a coupé and as a targa. In addition to the timeless design with the long hood, the Supra was primarily known for its engines. The so-called 2JZ are not only known for their durability, but also for their enormous tuning potential – power levels of 1000 hp and more are no problem.
The three-liter six-cylinder is available in two different versions: while the 2JZ-GE is a naturally aspirated engine with a standard output of 220 hp, the 2JZ-GTE is powered by two turbochargers and delivers at least 330 hp in standard trim. An automatic transmission was available as an option at no extra cost. Nowadays, however, the manual turbo models are particularly popular with collectors and fans – preferably in their original condition with an aerodynamics package.
Exactly such a model with a three-liter twin turbo and six-speed manual transmission was recently auctioned in the USA on the auction platform bringatrailer.com. The 1994 Supra in the rather unusual “Anthracite Metallic” color combination with a beige leather interior was once delivered by Toyota San Francisco and had a base new price of the equivalent of 39,800 euros (45,200 US dollars) 28 years ago. Including extras such as leather, sound system and the characteristic rear wing, the price rose to originally 43,100 euros (48,895 US dollars).
28 years and over 120,000 kilometers (75,000 miles) later, the Supra has now been sold for a whopping €123,000 ($140,000). The high price is probably mainly due to the good original condition – a rarity in the current Supra inventory. This copy was spared from conversions such as a wide body kit, tribals or gullwing doors and is even still on the original, shapely 17-inch rims.
However, this Supra does not come without modifications. A GReddy exhaust, an HKS blow-off valve, Koni shock absorbers and other little things were retrofitted, such as a boost pressure indicator. However, all original parts were also included in the price, so that the Supra could be 100 percent original again in no time at all.
Does the original condition and the engine-transmission combination justify a price of well over 120,000 euros? In this case, obviously yes – after all, someone was willing to pay that much money for a Supra with over 120,000 kilometers on the clock.
Incidentally, in Germany the Supra MKIV was only offered as a Targa and always with a turbo engine. The range of used copies is tiny, especially since most of the Supra are re-imports. The cheapest vacuum cleaners are available from almost 40,000 euros. With a bit of luck, the first turbo models don’t cost much more – but then often as right-hand drive and never in the original condition.
