In the course of the rapidly falling corona numbers, hopes of a significant recovery in the tourism sector in Mallorca are growing as early as spring. In April, 84 percent of all hotels and guesthouses on the Spanish holiday island will be open, as reported by the Mallorcan hotel association FEHM.
For comparison: in April last year, just 17 percent of all hotels were in operation. According to an FEHM survey, the proportion of open tourist accommodations in Mallorca is expected to rise by a further 40 points from the current 24 percent to 44 percent in March and then in April.
Among other things, the fact that Germany removed Spain from the list of high-risk areas a few days ago due to the positive development of the pandemic is causing optimism. Great Britain also recently announced the end of travel restrictions. In normal times, the Germans and the British are by far the largest tourist groups on Mallorca.
It is not yet possible to say to what extent the escalation of the Ukraine conflict with the Russian attack will affect travel, FEHM said.
However, the fact that companies in the sector are optimistic is proven by the fact that Palma and other areas of Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands are currently hiring again. German tour operator TUI this week interviewed dozens of people applying for 80 jobs as tour guides and customer service agents in Palma.
“It is clear that the tourism sector and the economy in general are currently being reactivated in Palma,” said Councilor Rodrigo Romero, in charge of Economic Promotion and Employment.
