And where are the residents reluctant to leave their house at night? The “Numbeo” database investigated all these questions in a large survey and used it to create a crime index that shows the most dangerous cities in Europe. The ranking at a glance.
According to Numbeo, a global database based on user information, more than 100,000 people in 6,273 cities worldwide took part in the survey on their personal sense of security. It turned out that Caracas is the world’s most dangerous city. The calculated crime index in the Venezuelan capital is almost 85, higher than anywhere else.
But what about Europe? Which cities are perceived as particularly dangerous here? TUSIGO shows the ten most dangerous cities in Europe according to the Numbeo ranking.
The ranking was created using several criteria and is based solely on the subjective perceptions of the survey participants. In this respect, the results should be viewed with caution – more on that below. For example, Numbeo asked about concerns about muggings and burglaries, as well as drug problems and racism in the city. Perceptions of problems with corruption and bribery were also taken into account. According to the company, only those cities are included in the ranking for which there are enough survey participants.
Bradford, in the English county of Yorkshire, was ranked number 1 among the most dangerous cities in Europe. Bradford’s crime index is 70.33, according to Numbeo, which is considered high. In particular, the problems associated with drug use and trafficking in the city were rated very highly by the survey participants. But Bradford also performed poorly on other issues, such as concerns about property crime.
The second most dangerous city is also in England: it is Coventry in the middle of the country. Drug offenses also play a role there, but so do burglaries and violent crimes. Third place in the inglorious ranking goes to the French coastal city of Nice. There, the safety of being outside alone at night is considered to be rather low. There are also complaints about the general increase in crime in recent years.
The Numbeo data should be treated with caution. Anyone in the world can fill the database with information. Although Numbeo states that it filters the surveys to prevent potential abuse, e.g. B. People entering a large amount of data that differs from the mean. However, the data as a whole cannot be verified.
In addition, the question arises as to why official data on crime cases in the respective cities were not included in the crime index. Numbeo writes: “In some countries, governments have detailed statistics based on the number of reported crimes per capita. These surveys are particularly good for comparing crime between two cities in that country, but are not so good for a cross-country comparison for the following reasons: In some countries, people are much more likely to report a crime than in other countries. Data could be falsified by government institutions and data is unavailable for most of the world.”
