Turkey wants to leave straits open for Russia

Contrary to Ukraine’s demands, Turkey wants to keep the Black Sea Straits open to Russia.

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet.

Transit must continue to be guaranteed to Russia on the basis of international law.

Russian ships are allowed to return to their home ports even in the event of war. That is regulated in the Treaty of Montreux, said Cavusoglu. If Turkey, which has sovereignty over the Straits, feels threatened, Russian shipping could be blocked. There is a corresponding wording in the contract. The situation will be analyzed further, said Cavusoglu.

Cavusoglu also ruled out the required sanctions. “We have always said that in principle sanctions do not solve problems,” he said. If the Straits were to be blocked for Russia, Moscow would be unable to bring any more warships into the Black Sea.
